We can all make a real difference to support people living with mental health problems. Perhaps, now more than ever, with the pandemic driving mental health problems, we need to keep a watchful eye on our own and our loved one’s mental wellbeing.

How can Healthcare Recruitment Companies make a difference and support positive mental health this year?

As an innovative company, we believe in leading change. We promote an open atmosphere and a safe space for all our team to express their concerns. As a healthcare-based agency, we understand how vital minding your mental health is, and it’s interlinking with physical wellbeing.

We all know that exercise, relaxation, good diet and talking is paramount to maintain a healthy mind and body, but a good work-life balance is equally important. That’s why locum work is becoming the choice for many healthcare professionals today.

So why is locum work good for your mental health?

  • Locum work pays better– so you can take that much needed holiday, and relieve stress with spa treatments, go out socialising more, and with more money debts become less of a concern. Having a better income allows you freedom from money worries and lets you spend more on the things that make you happy.
  • You will feel more in control of your working life –Locum work is flexible, and you decide where and when you work. This sense of control is crucial, especially if you live with a mental health issue such as anxiety.
  • Life/work balance – This is a huge factor in our mental wellbeing. Spending time at home relaxing or with family helps us unwind. With locum working, you get to choose how you divide up your working time and your home/life  time.
  • It’s interesting – you will meet new people often, you will gain tremendous experience for your CV, and it’s never dull!
  • Less burnout – locums have the ability to take a break more than permanent staff. Burnout is a common occupational hazard for full-time workers in demanding roles such a healthcare. Facing a full-on permanent position every day in the same stressful environment can be daunting and can lead to burning out.

While we don’t claim that locum working equals excellent mental health, of course not, but thinking a bit differently about how we work, when we work, and where we work can have a knock-on positive effect on our mental health.

It is essential that anyone with mental health concerns talks to their GP, a loved one or a trusted friend- but talk to someone. Don’t suffer in silence, we all have a responsibility to look out for each other and play our part in opening the discussion on mental health, seeking ways to improve mental health and vaccinating the silent virus named stigma once and for all.

Raising Awareness to beat down the stigma!

One of the best ways to deal with mental health stigma is through knowledge, understanding, and talking openly about the issues.

This year on World Mental Health Day, the World Health Organization will, for the first time ever, hold a global online advocacy event on mental health. The Big Event for Mental Health sees world leaders, mental health experts and celebrity guests join WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, to tell the world what we can all do to improve our mental health. So let’s join in and advocate for mental health stigma to be banished.
