To work as a locum, you need to be a fully qualified doctor and be registered as a practitioner or a GP. A significant amount of experience in your medical field will also stand you in good stead, as many locums find this to be a benefit when applying for positions.
For a locum nurse, you will need six months experience within the setting that you wish to be booked into.
All healthcare professionals must be fully compliant before they start work. At ProMedical, we pride ourselves on a quick and effective compliance process. There’s no need for you to worry, as we will do the legwork for you.
As an international doctor or nurse, you must be registered with a professional body, such as the GMC, NMC or HCPC. Upon completion of the relevant exams, you will be approved and gain your licence to practice in the UK.
The time taken to complete this process can vary between doctors and nurses. It is also dependent on your circumstances, such as how quickly you complete these exams and pay the fees. In addition, you will need to confirm your degree(s) obtained from foreign universities.
In order to organise clinical attachments and gain experience in local hospitals and community placements, nurses and HCAs will need to have 6 months experience in the UK. Doctors will need a clinical attachment to get UK references if they haven’t already organised a placement in the UK.
Our recruitment process is simple, efficient and designed to suit you. Once you register your interest, one of our recruitment consultants will be in touch with you to discuss the role or your specific requirements. After this initial call, you will be allocated to our dedicated compliance team, who will ensure that you become fully compliant and ready to start your new role. From there, you’ll return to your recruitment consultant to be booked for a job.
Depending on your nationality and country of origin, you may need to take an exam to prove your level of proficiency in the English language. The accredited tests are the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the Occupational English Test (OET). You can read more about these tests on their dedicated websites.
In some cases, such as holders of the Tier 2 UK visa, you will not be required to sit one of the above English exams, because an Occupational English Test (OET) is deemed sufficient.
